Supporting Your Child During Exam Season
Supporting Your Child During Exam Season (GCSE & A Level)
As exam season begins, the support students receive at home can make a real difference to confidence, wellbeing and performance. Families play a vital role, even when revision is well underway.
- Encourage routines, not perfection - Short, regular revision sessions are far more effective than long hours of last‑minute revision. Help your child maintain a realistic daily routine that includes breaks, meals and downtime.
- Focus on sleep, nutrition and hydration - Adequate sleep is essential for memory and concentration - especially in the weeks leading up to exams. Encourage consistent sleep routines, regular meals and plenty of water to support focus and energy levels.
- Stay calm and positive - Young people often mirror the emotions of adults around them. Reassurance, encouragement and belief in their efforts can reduce anxiety and build confidence - even more than ongoing reminders to revise.
- Help them get exam‑ready - Simple practical checks can reduce stress on the day, Know exam times and locations, Prepare equipment the night before, Encourage arriving early to exams & Practice timings using past papers. (A Level students often benefit from practising longer exam routines and stamina.)
- Keep communication open - Some students want to talk; others prefer quiet reassurance. Make time to check in, listen without pressure and remind them that support is always available - at home and at school.
- Encourage asking for help - If your child is unsure about a topic or feeling overwhelmed, encourage them to speak to their teachers or pastoral staff. Support is available across all our schools, and no student is expected to manage exam pressure alone.
- Put results into perspective - While exams matter, they do not define a young person’s worth or future. Reminding students that effort, resilience and growth are valued can significantly reduce anxiety and help them perform at their best.
We are incredibly proud of the commitment, maturity and perseverance our students have shown throughout their exam preparation. Thank you to families for the encouragement and support you provide - together, we help our young people approach this period with confidence and resilience.
