Governors play a vital role in shaping strategic decisions, championing pupil wellbeing, and ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive. Their work often happens behind the scenes, but its impact is felt in every classroom, every safeguarding conversation, every moment of support for staff and families.

This day is about shining a light on the people who ask thoughtful questions, offer challenge with care, and hold our values at the centre of every decision. Their commitment helps create safe, ambitious and inclusive environments where young people can grow with confidence.

We are incredibly grateful for everything they do to support our schools and the young people we serve.

The girls’ team finished in 15th place and the boys’ team in 16th place, separated by just a single point - a clear reflection of how closely matched, focused, and competitive the event was. Competing against grammar, private, and international schools, both teams demonstrated impressive mathematical ability, teamwork, and resilience throughout the day.

The Trust extends a huge thank you to the Premises Team for supporting with transport and remaining with the group for the entire day. Sincere thanks also go to the wider team for their invaluable support with logistics. Mr M. Barrett and Mrs F. Abdulsalam‑Mustafa are recognised for their ongoing commitment to supporting both teams every Tuesday.

Safer Internet Day 2026 takes place on Tuesday 10 February, with the theme “Smart tech, safe choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI.” This theme reflects how artificial intelligence now shapes many aspects of children’s online lives, from personalised recommendations to voice assistants and homework tools.

To support families, we have gathered a collection of trusted UK-specific resources offering practical guidance, conversation ideas, and age-appropriate support.

Official Guidance from the UK Safer Internet Centre

The UK Safer Internet Centre (UKSIC) provides the key resources for Safer Internet Day 2026. Their dedicated hub includes advice on using AI safely, talking to children about new technologies, and supporting responsible digital choices at home.

Practical Advice and Conversation Starters

A parent-friendly information letter is also available. It explains how AI affects the information children see online, how AI may be used during homework, and the potential risks linked with misuse such as scams or manipulated images. It also provides conversation starters to help families approach the topic confidently.

ParentLine – UK’s AI Online Safety Assistant

ParentLine is the UK’s first AI‑powered online safety assistant for parents. It provides clear, practical guidance on online risks, apps, games, social media, AI tools, cyberbullying, privacy settings and more. It uses verified information from the NSPCC, Internet Matters and the UK Safer Internet Centre.

AI Safety Resources Designed for Parents

The London Grid for Learning (LGfL) offers specific materials to help families navigate generative AI. These include an explainer video, a downloadable parent letter, and a ready-made presentation for running parent information sessions.

The NSPCC provides trusted, expert‑backed tips on how AI tools work, what risks they pose to children, how to recognise AI‑generated content and how to talk to children about what they’re seeing online.

Global guidance focused on children’s rights in the age of AI. Helps parents understand AI risks, child data protection, fairness, transparency and how global changes affect young people.

Why These Resources Matter

AI is increasingly present in children’s everyday digital interactions. Whether through search results, games, online platforms, homework support or social media, children often engage with AI without realising it. Providing families with accurate information and practical tools helps children:

• Recognise when AI is being used
• Think critically about information online
• Understand the limitations and risks of AI
• Make safe and responsible choices

These resources empower parents and carers to guide children confidently and support positive digital experiences.

The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust has confirmed that the theme for HMD 2026 is “Bridging Generations”. This theme highlights the vital role each generation plays in carrying forward the memory of the Holocaust and more recent genocides. As survivors grow older, the responsibility to listen, learn, and share their stories becomes a collective act of remembrance and a commitment to building a safer, more compassionate future.

It encourages communities, schools, and organisations to explore how memory is passed on, how stories shape understanding, and how we can all contribute to safeguarding truth against distortion or denial.

It Began with Words – New Holocaust Memorial Day Film

It Began with Words explores how the Holocaust began not with violence, but with words, with stereotypes, prejudice and silence. Through survivor testimony and historical insight, it shows how ordinary people and everyday choices allowed hatred to grow. Light the Darkness

Each year people from across the UK take part in our Light the Darkness national moment for Holocaust Memorial Day.

At 8pm on 27 January people across the nation will light candles and put them safely in their windows to:

• remember those who were murdered for who they were
• stand against prejudice and hatred today
• Iconic buildings and landmarks will light up in purple during this powerful national moment of commemoration and solidarity

This recognition is not given lightly. It is a testament to the collective effort of our teachers, support staff, leaders, and of course, our students, whose ambition and resilience continue to inspire us. The impact you make every day is profound, and it is now being acknowledged at the highest level. 

This national commendation shines a light on the remarkable work happening across our Trust and the life‑changing impact our schools have on young people.

My next session was the one I’d been most looking forward to: Growing up online: Confronting misogyny and protecting young people. Laura Bates and Samantha Booth delivered an honest, challenging and incredibly insightful conversation about the rise of harmful online narratives targeting boys, the impact of biased algorithms, and the role schools can play in responding with empathy and clarity. Laura’s suggestion that we sign up to social platforms “as a teenager” to truly understand the content our young people are exposed to was particularly powerful. This was, without question, my favourite session of the week - full of practical ideas and thought‑provoking moments.

To round off the morning, I joined AI for all: From classrooms to careers, led by Aanya Niaz from the AWS Education Equity Initiative. The panel shared inspiring global examples of how AI is widening access to quality education, from real‑time classroom analytics to creative computing in low‑resource settings. It was an uplifting and practical look at how AI can genuinely expand opportunities for learners everywhere.

Attending events like Bett is always such a privilege, and it reinforces how important it is for us to keep learning, questioning and exploring new ways to strengthen and improve our Trust for the communities we serve.

We want to make you aware of upcoming changes to local bus services that may affect your child’s journey to and from school. From Saturday 24 January 2026, Transport for London (TfL) will introduce a new Superloop route, SL11, operating between North Greenwich Bus Station and Abbey Wood Station via Woolwich town centre.

New SL11 Route

The SL11 will run a limited‑stop service between North Greenwich and Abbey Wood. It will only stop at specific bus stops along the route, including:

• Stop MC named Millennium Village / Oval Square located on West Parkside 
• Stop MF named Millennium Leisure Park East at Greenwich Peninsula

• Sunday: every 15 minutes before 09:30, then every 12 minutes
• First buses will depart at 04:58 from Abbey Wood and 05:00 from North Greenwich daily. Last buses will run at 00:00 (midnight) from both ends of the route.

Changes to Route 472

• As part of these changes:
• Route 472 will be withdrawn.
• The SL11 will replace the 472 only at the stops it serves.
• A new night service, N472, will operate every 30 minutes between North Greenwich and Abbey Wood, serving all current 472 stops overnight.

If Your Child Uses Route 472

Some stops previously served by the 472 will not be served by the SL11. 

These stops will continue to be served by other frequent local routes, including 161, 177, 180, 244, 301 and 380.

Families may need to plan for:

• A change of bus during the journey
• Slightly longer travel times
• Adjustments to morning or afternoon routines

PolyMAT is delighted to support Bannockburn Primary School’s annual Fun Run, taking place on Sunday 8th March at 10am at the Manor Way site.

This fantastic community event offers 2km, 5km and 10km races, with medals and trophies awarded on the day. It’s a brilliant opportunity for families, friends, and local residents to come together, get active, and celebrate community spirit.

Bannockburn is proud to be hosting this event in partnership with Cancer Research UK, helping raise awareness and support vital work.

We look forward to seeing our community come together for a morning of energy, positivity, and purpose. 

The sessions offer students practical, evidence-based and medically informed tools to support emotional regulation, stress management, healthy habits and cognitive focus. They are designed as an accessible, off-timetable opportunity for students, requiring no staff supervision and forming part of our wider funded wellbeing work across the borough.

The programme is an extension of our school-based initiative and provides a supportive option for students who benefit from applied, accessible - yet not readily available - wellbeing strategies.

I headed straight to The Arena for my first keynote of the day, a completely packed session with Professor Hannah Fry and Amol Rajan. Their conversation explored how artificial intelligence is reshaping education, touching on personalised learning, ethics, and the importance of keeping human connection at the heart of teaching. The audience were fully involved too, with several thoughtful questions that added even more depth to the discussion.

Next up was Jason Wilmot’s keynote on how creativity and artificial intelligence are redefining what is possible in the classroom with Canva, offering fresh ways to spark curiosity and build future‑ready skills. He also introduced Canva’s Affinity, a new free design application featuring customisable Vector, Pixel, and Layout studios - essentially all the design and photo‑editing tools you need in one place. 

Using Canva every day for our trust‑wide design projects means Affinity will slot perfectly into my workflow, and I am really looking forward to getting stuck in and exploring what it can do.

After the session, I headed to the Canva stand for an insightful demonstration, some great conversations with their advisors, and even managed to bag myself a sketchy notebook and pencil from their free vending machine!

Another highlight was the BBC Education stand, which once again delivered a brilliant range of resources, including their 2025/2026 year planner. It is something I have picked up in previous years because it is incredibly practical, making it easy to mark key educational dates and feed them straight into our school calendar.

All in all, it was a day full of inspiration, useful tools, and plenty of ideas I am excited to be bringing back to our trust.

This year’s outcomes highlight a borough where high achievement is widespread, consistent and deeply embedded across its schools. Greenwich’s performance places it firmly at the forefront of primary education in the region.

Among the many strong results across Greenwich, Bannockburn Primary School achieved 73 per cent, placing it securely within the borough’s upper-performing schools. If you are looking for something fun, free, and a bit different to brighten up the winter evenings, Winter Lights at Canary Wharf is the perfect half‑term escape. The festival is celebrating its tenth birthday this year and runs from Tuesday 20th January to Saturday 31st January, with the lights glowing from 5.00pm to 10.00pm every evening.

This year’s theme, DREAMSCAPE, feels like stepping into another world. There are sixteen incredible light installations created by artists from across the globe - glowing structures, moving displays, and immersive pieces that make you stop, take photos, and just enjoy the moment.

You can wander through colourful tunnels, explore giant illuminated sculptures, and discover interactive installations that are great fun for teenagers and adults alike. It is creative, surreal, and a brilliant way to spend an evening without spending any money.

Whether you are heading out with friends, taking a family trip, or just looking for something inspiring to do after school, Winter Lights is a fantastic way to get out, explore, and enjoy the city. And the best part is that it is completely free.

We have now received the finished folders and are thrilled with the results. The print and design quality is excellent, and the folders are highly versatile - able to hold multiple booklets and documents. They will be used across PolyMAT, Woolwich Polytechnic Sixth Form, Woolwich Polytechnic School for Boys, Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls, and Bannockburn Primary School.

This has been a fantastic project, and we have thoroughly enjoyed working once again with FSE.

Today marks our five-year anniversary on YouTube. We launched the channel on 11 December 2020, at a time when the world looked very different. Since then, it has grown into a vibrant platform that showcases the creativity, achievements, and spirit of our schools, staff, students, and communities.

Over the past five years we have:

Achieved 1,900 hours of watch time - that is nearly 80 full days of continuous viewing!

Shared 187 videos, each one carefully crafted to capture special moments and celebrate our community

We are proud to share that Bannockburn Primary School, one of our schools within the Trust, has achieved first place in the Best Blooming Gardener competition in Royal Greenwich!

This incredible achievement marks the fourth time Bannockburn has entered the competition and secured a winning position - a true reflection of the dedication and teamwork within the school community.

The children and staff have worked tirelessly to nurture and maintain the beautiful garden on the KS1 playground. Their commitment has transformed the space into a vibrant and welcoming environment, and the children are rightly proud of their efforts.

What Is Disability History Month?

UKDHM is more than a commemorative event; it is a movement. It aims to:

• Celebrate the resilience and achievements of disabled individuals.
• Educate about historical injustices, from institutionalisation to eugenics.
• Advocate for systemic change, ensuring disabled voices lead conversations about rights and inclusion. 

The month also aligns with key international observances such as World AIDS Day (1 Dec), International Day of Persons with Disabilities (3 Dec), and Human Rights Day (10 Dec), reinforcing the global nature of disability rights.

Theme for 2025: “Disability, Life and Death”

This year’s theme, Disability, Life and Death, addresses pressing ethical and social questions surrounding assisted dying legislation currently debated in Parliament. Many disabled activists fear that such laws could undermine their right to life, echoing historical prejudices that once justified sterilisation, euthanasia, and exclusion under the guise of “mercy.” 

The theme calls for reflection on:

• The inherent value of disabled lives, as affirmed by Article 10 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

• Historical lessons, from Nazi-era atrocities to the eugenics movement, remind us why vigilance against discriminatory ideologies remain vital.

Chinonso completed the full 7 years at Woolwich Poly before leaving in 2017. He looks back fondly on the amazing teachers, staff, and classmates who went the extra mile and made his journey unforgettable.

Today, he’s thriving as a rail engineer while also building his own gaming agency in his spare time.

PolyMAT was proud to attend this event on Thursday 19th November. We met so many fantastic companies and marketing professionals and attended some thought-provoking sessions, including “Why It’s Personalisation or Bust for Marketers 2026” and “Marketing in the Age of Exponential Video Growth with Vimeo.”

We came away with loads of notes and fresh ideas, and we can’t wait to start implementing some of these within our Trust. At PolyMAT, we’re always keen to learn, grow, and push our marketing forward, and this event gave us plenty of inspiration to do just that.

Kaycee exemplifies the values of a true Poly Boy - humour, compassion, kindness, and resilience. His exceptional football talent, combined with determination and a positive attitude, has opened doors to opportunities that will last a lifetime.

Reflecting on his journey, Kaycee shared:
"I started Year 11 without a clear idea of what my next step after GCSEs would be. Many said it was too late for a football career, but I stayed strong and kept working hard. When Mr Walsh selected me for a trial at Bradfield College, I was shocked by the facilities and the chance to make it there. A week before my first GCSE exam, I got the call saying a space had opened for a scholarship - I was over the moon! I focused on my exams, worked hard, and shortly after, I was offered a full scholarship."

Kaycee now trains four times a week while studying for his A Levels and has already competed against prestigious colleges such as Eton. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to Woolwich Poly staff, especially Mr Walsh, for their unwavering support:
"I will never forget what they have done for me - I couldn’t have done it without them. My message to younger students is simple: never give up and take every opportunity given to you!"

Miss R James, Head of Year: 
"Kaycee has always been the epitome of a Poly Boy. His humour, compassion, kindness, and resilience have shone through in everything he does. His exceptional talent and determination have led him to an incredible scholarship at Bradfield College. We could not be happier for him."

On Tuesday 7th October, the London Trust Leaders Network (LTLN) convened once again for a dynamic morning of discussion and collaboration at the stunning Drapers’ Hall in London. The event brought together senior education leaders from across the capital to explore key developments in policy, planning, and inclusion.

The morning began with refreshments and informal networking from 9:30am, before the agenda officially opened at 10:00am with a session led by Alan Parnum, Acting Regional Director at the Department for Education, who was joined by colleagues Dominic Riddex and Judith Fuller. Together, they provided a comprehensive overview of current headlines in education, pupil place planning, and strategies for mainstream inclusion. Their insights were followed by a contribution from Matt Jones, RISE Advisor, who added further depth to the discussion with practical strategies and sector-wide perspectives.

Following a short break at 11:30am, attendees heard from Steve Rollett, Deputy CEO of the Confederation of School Trusts (CST), who provided valuable updates on national policy and the evolving landscape of trust inspection.

Reflecting on the event, several founding members and attendees shared their thoughts:

The LTLN was established by Gill Kemp, Matthew Kleiner-Mann, Tim Plumb, and Sian John—leaders who envisioned a collaborative space for London-based trust leaders to share best practice, influence policy, and drive meaningful change across the education sector.

The atmosphere throughout the morning was one of genuine engagement and shared purpose. We thoroughly enjoyed welcoming colleagues to Drapers’ Hall and look forward to even more trust leaders joining us for the next LTLN event.

There is something truly special about this time of year. As autumn settles in, the green spaces surrounding our secondary schools in Thamesmead are transforming into a patchwork of crunchy leaves and warm colours, making the walk to school feel a bit more magical.

With October half term just around the corner, it is the perfect time to pause and reflect on the progress our students have made and what we have achieved so far this term.
