On Friday 4th September, PolyMAT welcomed Members, Trustees and Academy Committee Members from across the Trust to Somerset House for our annual Governance Conference, a day dedicated to learning, collaboration and professional development.

The conference brought together governance volunteers from across our family of schools to share best practice, strengthen relationships and explore the latest developments in education governance, accountability and strategic leadership. The event focused on ensuring those serving our schools remain equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to provide effective support and challenge.

A key highlight of the day was a thought-provoking session led by Katie Paxton, NGA Consultant, exploring the National Governance Association's 4D Governance framework. The framework encourages governing boards to consider four interconnected dimensions of effective governance: the organisation's purpose, the people around the board table, the quality of governance practice, and the impact governance has on outcomes for children and young people. Participants were challenged to reflect on governance through these lenses, reinforcing the crucial role that strong governance plays in supporting school improvement and achieving the very best outcomes for students.

The programme featured a range of sessions designed to strengthen governance knowledge and practice across the Trust, including an interactive workshop on effective governance, an update on the current Ofsted framework, safeguarding training, and an overview of key governance developments for the 2026-27 academic year. Throughout the day, attendees had opportunities to connect with colleagues, exchange experiences and discuss the shared challenges and opportunities facing school governance.

In her closing remarks, Chair of Trustees Sylvia Perrins reflected on the key themes and learning from each session, highlighting how the insights gained throughout the day would help shape and inform PolyMAT's future governance work. She thanked attendees for their commitment and contribution, emphasising the vital role that strong governance plays in supporting the Trust's schools and wider communities.

The success of the conference was made possible through the collective efforts of colleagues and partners who supported the event.
